Menne, Sayre capture JGAA’s POY honors


T


he JGAA announced its Player of the Year and Sportsmanship awards across five age-group divisions at


its annual awards banquet held Oct. 30 at Moon Valley Country Club. “This is always one of the most


rewarding evenings of the year,” said Scott McNevin, executive director of the JGAA. “And although a handful of players actually earn the award, many others put in the time and effort to win. “All of this year’s award winners


are not only talented players on the golf course, but truly display the characteristics off the course as well.” Earning the Player of the Year Award


in the girls’ championship division was Ashley Menne. She had one of the most successful seasons in JGAA history, winning 12 tournaments and finishing in the top three in 19 of the 21 events. Menne compiled a scoring average of 72.2 during the year. She also competed on the Arizona team in the Girls Junior America’s Cup and the USGA Girls’ Junior Championship. In the boys’ championship division, Hayden Sayre captured the Player of

the Year honors. Sayre finished in the top five in nine of the JGAA events he played in, and had wins in the Arizona Junior Match Play Championship and the AM&E Classic presented by Bryce Molder, with a 2nd place finish in the Charlie Beljan Invitational. He also competed on the Arizona team in the Junior America’s Cup.

Patriot All-America Invitational


set for Wigwam in late December Defending tournament champion Braden Thornberry from the University of Mississippi, Sean Crocker from the University of Southern California, Will Gordon from Vanderbilt and John Oda from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas are among the headliners for the Patriot All-America Invitational collegiate golf tournament, to be played at The Wigwam Golf Club in Litchfield Park, Dec. 27-31. A field of 84 top amateur players will compete in a 54-hole, stroke-


play competition on The Wigwam’s famed Gold Course. Featuring golf’s stars of tomorrow, the Patriot All-America is regarded as a top amateur event nationally, attracting PING All-America golfers from all three NCAA Divisions, NAIA and NJCAA rankings as well as from universities outside the United States. The Arizona Golf Association, JDM Partners and the Golf Coaches Association of America are once again partnering with the Folds of Honor Foundation to host the sixth annual tournament.

Two Patriot All-America alums have won the Air Capital Classic, including defending 2016 Air Capital Classic champion Ollie Schniederjans (2011 and 2012 Patriot participant) and 2014 Air Capital Classic champion Sebastian Cappelen (2011, 2012 and 2013 Patriot participant and 2012 Patriot champion). In cooperation with the Folds of Honor Foundation, the golfers in


The Patriot All-America will continue the tradition to represent a fallen soldier. Every participant will receive a golf bag at the event’s opening ceremony with the name and branch of service of a fallen or injured military member whom they shall represent. At the conclusion of the tournament, the golf bags will be shipped to players’ schools and auctioned with all proceeds benefitting the Folds of Honor Foundation. n
