Among the many amenities at Victory at Verrado are four swimming pools, like the one shown here in the clubhouse’s courtyard.
It certainly was a tricky environment
to build a golf course, and Lehman said he and his partner, Chris Brands, could not have done it without one key component. That would be DMB, which is made up of a trio of wealthy Arizona business leaders — Drew Brown, Mark Sklar and Bennett Dorrance, the latter being the Campbell Soup billionaire. “Those guys have been great
to work with, really going out of their way to ensure we got the best results possible,” he said of the trio, who have built such other award- winning golf communities as Martis Camp near Lake Tahoe; Glendwild in Park City, Utah; Kukui’ula in Kauai, Hawaii; and Santaluz in San Diego. All the other pieces of the Victory pie
are slowly coming together seamlessly, including a 12-acre practice facility

that is up and running called the Golf Playground. Currently in the construction phase is a modest-size pro shop (4,000 square feet) with a picturesque 18th-hole patio that will open within the calendar year. Certainly the pro shop is small in size, but, hey, why build another 19th hole when the larger clubhouse that sits just up the hill already features the area’s
hottest restaurant (yes, it’s open to the public) called the Vic Bar + Kitchen? No wonder 200 homes already have
been built at Victory, which is only in its second year. It’s a coveted commodity in real estate, with four builders — T.W. Lewis, Lennar, Cal-Atlantic and Maracay — delivering homes “built to entertain in a single-story environment,” according to Taratsas. Those homes range in price from the mid-$200,000s to the mid- $700,000s and from 1,450 square feet up to 3,450 square feet, with the common denominator being a flair for combining the indoor-outdoor environment. “Everything at Victory is coming
together nicely, and we’re really noticing the momentum in our second year,” Taratsas said. “And now that the golf course is finally in place, the residents, who already have been walking the course daily in anticipation, are just crazy-eager to get on it.” And perhaps the best news of all if
you’re a golfer, Taratsas added: “It’s open to the public. Anybody can play it.” n
