NEW LINCOLN RESTAURANT JOINS BAR 1936 TO GIVE CAMELBACK INN FRESH, NEW APPEARANCE
L
incoln Restaurant is the new star at the JW Marriott Camelback Inn
Resort & Spa. After just opening in October, this elegant place is a dress- yourself-nice experience, as dining has always been at this posh Paradise Valley estate. How good is it? Well,
let’s start with its signature Allen Brothers bone-in rib-eye ($48) finished in butter and hickory smoked sea salt. Yes, hard to beat. Yet here’s a little secret.
The new lounge, called Bar 1936 (for the year the grand
resort opened), also offers cuisine from Lincoln’s chef, Chris Neff, on an abbreviated menu and with a more casual mood. Set right next to Lincoln, the bar beckons for a pleasing wild mushroom flatbread with buttermilk ricotta and whiskey glaze ($13), alongside a cocktail like the Copper State Sour of Park Rye whiskey, lemon juice, agave syrup, housemade grapefruit bitters and a froth of egg white ($12). Several of the same dishes
are offered both at Lincoln and the lounge, too, like the crispy good Ramona Farms

chickpea fritters dressed with mildly smoked yogurt, roasted eggplant and a refreshing jolt of pickled Persian cucumber ($13). Again, unbeatable. Whichever space you
choose, you’re in for a steakhouse experience that’s sophisticated, but not as serious as the BLT Steak that previously occupied the space. No white tablecloths here. Instead we dine on polished wood tables, at the lovingly weathered bar set with leather chairs, or at round wood bistro tables on the patio trimmed in flowers and deep green shrubs.
And since both spots are dinner-only, the showstopper throughout is sunset views of Camelback Mountain. I’m happy for the change.
Now the focus is much more local than the New York-based BLT Steak was during its run. This inn has been a favorite family haunt of mine for many decades, and with an Arizona team back in charge of its flagship restaurant, it seems like home again. All meals should begin
with yorkies, which are steaming hot, bite-sized English Yorkshire puddings striped with black pepper
