News Drugs on path
PARENTS have been warned to be on their guard after drugs were found on an East Malling footpath. One stash contained about five
tablets of chlorodiazepam, which is used to treat depression. Walker Jackie Day found the packet, took them home and crushed and disposed of them. On the next two days of her reg-
ular morning walk she found empty amitriptyline packets. The footpath cuts through St
James The Great churchyard and is used by members of a weekly mother and toddler group. Workers at East Malling Re-
search Centre also use the pathway. Mrs Day said: “I’m worried
about children picking these up and slipping them in their pocket.” She posted her concern and her findings on the Facebook page East Malling Matters and reported it to the village communitywarden.

Park’s grieving swan ‘could find new love’
A BROKEN-hearted swan trans- ferred from Manor Park at West Malling following a dog attack may have a second chance of love. That is the hope of rescuers from
the Swans and Friends Bird Rescue centre, who were called to an in- jured female at the country park. Unfortunately, the swan – whowas found to have a six-inch wound under her wing – later died, in spite of efforts to save her. Volunteer John Potts said: “Itwas
a massive dog bite that she proba- bly sustained while defending her eggs on the water’s edge. Had it been a fox it would have gone for the head.” He added: “It would be a sur-
prise if the dog’s owners weren’t aware of what had happened, but sadly, they left the swan with in- juries that she never recovered from.” Days later the centre, which is
near Twickenham, received a call to say that the swan’s mate was wan- dering around the village looking for his mate. John returned toWest- Malling and decided to re-intro- duce the cob atWateringbury.
He said: “We decided to move
him where there are other wild swans. Although hewas chased off by a male, later a female came over and gave him the nod and they seemed to hit it off. We will just have towait and see.” He hopes that if the swans – who usually mate for life – pair up, the male will take his partner back to West Malling. In the meantime, he urged any-
one with a dog to ensure it is kept under control, or muzzled if off the lead. He said: “Unfortunately, if a dog
Swan rescuer John Potts (left)has urged dog walkers to keep their pets under control after a swan was killed
– and it must have been a big dog – takes on a swan, it’s my view that they could take on a toddler too.” A spokesman for the RSPCA
South East added "We would urge people to keep their dogs under control when they're around wildlife and birds. Swans, their nests and their eggs are protected under the Wildlife and Country- side Act. “If anyone has any information
about this incident they should contact the RSPCA appeal line on 0300 123 8018.”
