And the Ret is History... Marvin Manring, Historian

Put Claude in the Hall!

It’s time to make a serious push to nominate Claude T. Smith for induction to the Hall of Famous Missourians. This ongoing display in the rotunda of our state capitol building commemorates citizens of the Show-Me State who have achieved prominence in their chosen field.

The Hall boasts sporting superstars, broadcast legends, entertainers, military heroes, and figures in arts and literature. So...why not one of Missouri’s best-known, most-performed composers? Our state association has already conferred its highest honor, adding Claude to the MMEA Hall of Fame in 1989.

The process for supporting a successful nomination is fairly nebulous. Up until a few years ago, the selection was entirely up to the Office of the Speaker of the House. An online process yielded great support for Claude and our Association’s members will need to act together in order to galvanize a larger effort among our students and the Missouri music community in general.

Write, call, e-mail your state representative, and copy it to the Speaker’s office. Encourage others to do likewise. How about making a positive contact with some of our state leaders, in this day and age of so much negativity?

All of this comes on the heels of Pam Smith Kelly’s tribute, “Claude T. Smith; Harmony From Within,” now available through C.L. Barnhouse and Amazon. If you are among MMEA’s newest generation, I urge you to meet this gentleman not only through his amazing compositions, but also within the pages of this wonderful book. Share it with students, colleagues, and friends, and encourage the advocacy needed to add Claude’s name and likeness to the Hall of Famous Missourians.

Got ideas for our 80th Annual Conference? The history room will be back with our Association’s archival materials, and we invite you to stop in and visit.

SILVEY (research), from p. 37

Michael Hudson and Martina Vasil (both of the University of Kentucky) investigated the use of K-12 music educators’ use of technology and social media platforms as tools for communication with students and parents. Results indicated that teachers preferred email and Facebook as a means of communication with both students and parents, with the authors writing that these platforms allowed them to disseminate information quickly and easily. In an ever-increasing digital age, these results may speak to the importance of teachers and music booster organization groups to disseminate information digitally.

I would like to thank the MJRME Editorial Board for their dedication in reviewing for the journal: Matthew Fredrickson, Carol McDowell, Joe Parisi, Charles Robinson, and Wendy Sims. My thanks also go to former Editor (and now Associate Editor, Daniel Hellman) and Managing Editor, Matthew Udland. The task of getting a new edition of the MJRME ready for publication takes lots of dedicated people, and I am indebted to their help in promoting the importance of music education research throughout Missouri and beyond.
