How can we connect our audience to this piece of music?

young performers have to draw upon, and do middle school and elementary school students even maintain the same repertoire of emotions and memories that an adult has?
I feel fortunate when students come to me and say, “I loved that song we played,” I will ask the student what it was about that piece that appealed to them. Often, they tell me they don’t know. When an audience member will remark about the amazing performance they witnesses, my mind is preoccupied with the oboe solo a minor second above pitch or how side A and side B of the ensemble were not together.
