DICKINSON, from pg. 19

• Music makes me feel marvelous because when I listen to it I feel like I just won the lottery. -Andrew, grade 5 • Music makes me stop thinking about the things that make me sad or angry. -Annabella, grade 4 • The beat inspires me to make my own beat. -Isaiah, grade 3 • Music makes me feel relaxed because when I tired I listen to music and I feel relaxed and make me go to the dream. -Anh, grade 5

• Music just makes me free. -Jovana, grade 5

These comments really gave me some insight into my students’ thoughts, although I would certainly not classify this activity as warranting emotional responses. Emotional responses cannot be structured as a part of a lesson plan. It is not as simple as writing objectives like “The student will have an emotional response to music” or statements like “I can respond emotionally to a musical sample.” Chances are it will not transfer to data for progress monitoring or a summative evaluation. But as it happens naturally in a musical experience, it is important, it is authentic, and we ought to recognize and celebrate it when it happens. Let us not discount the value of an emotional response to music. It is truly inspiring that our subject matter can touch the emotions of our students and help them become artful adults. That is why we teach music! It is, quite literally, the heart of what we do.
