CIC Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary with Significant Investment and Growth

apital Injection Ceramics Ltd. (CIC), a subsidiary of Capital Refractories Ltd. (CRL), was established in 2007 and was created in response to a need in the market for a core supplier run by technically experienced management that would focus on customer needs, on developing cores to be consistent with excellent delivery.

C In April 2017, CIC will

celebrate its 10th Anniversary supplying cores to the aerospace, industrial gas turbine and commercial markets. Founded and managed by Fraser

Strath, a 15-year veteran in Ceramic Cores at Morgan Certech, CIC was established because of Fraser’s frustration at

his previous employer’s corporate

structure. This structure wouldn’t allow changes to the material or process that would produce a more robust core. By creating an independent core company, CIC, Fraser would be able to make changes quickly and this enabled CIC to develop and solve problem cores much quicker. This is most notable when in its

first years, 60 airfoil ceramic core dies for OEM IGT programs were transferred to CIC. This quickly established CIC as a world class ceramic core producer and solidified the Company’s position in the ceramic core market. It also established CIC’s ability to transfer core tooling from competitors with little or no rework. Since 2007, CIC has steadily grown

at an average rate of 30 programs/year primarily in IGT but also in aerospace, commercial, automotive and medical markets. New to the industry, about 70% CIC’s initial production was comprised

of transfer programs and

cores with problems that the customer needed fixed. This meant that CIC had to mature very quickly. In recent years, after proving their viability in the market place,

CIC’s product mix underwent

a shift from 70% transfer programs to 85% newly tooled programs. This shift toward new programs has highlighted the need in the market to develop technology to create prototype cores for CIC’s customers so that while the

core tooling is being built, the customer can develop their casting process. CIC is exploring two different avenues to develop prototype cores and actively is working with a UK university on a separate project for improved tolerances. CIC’s capabilities range from
