The life of a GILLIAN SLADE
His heart stopped three times in one day after doing cocaine and crack. It may have had a profound effect on those around him but Harry, in his 40s, was oblivious.
“When you wake up you don’t know what happened,” he explained.
Harry’s sister died in June 2016 from a drug overdose. She was only 35. Tears well up in Harry’s eyes and spill onto his cheeks. He wipes his eyes again and again in grief. She was on painkillers and was a diabetic, said Harry. She was going through treatment for addiction and was working on turning her life around. Harry had just been released from jail
drug addict and feels bad he was not there for her.
“I was the big brother. I was the role model,” said Harry.
Sipping beer from his dad’s glass when he was little was his first taste of alcohol. By age 13 he was into hard liquor. It became the thing to do with school buddies every weekend. It was not long before he was introduced to smoking marijuana.
“I was trying to be the popular kid,” he explains.
In some respects Harry was just like any other kid. He had a newspaper route and worked part time at a gas station.
