◗ 1889 construction of the hospital in Medicine Hat started on Second Street S.E. at a cost of $25,000 that was raised by the public.


◗ 1890 the 25-bed hospital was officially opened and patients admitted.


◗ 1894 the first school of nursing was started.


◗ 1895 the Women’s Hospital Aid Society was established and the Lady Aberdeen Wing for maternity was built at a cost of $5,000.


◗ 1896 the first nurses graduate.


◗ 1904 a nurses residence was built for $6,800 and then enlarged for $12,000 in 1912.


◗ 1948 ownership of the hospital was transferred to the City of Medicine Hat.


◗ 1953 the municipal hospital district was established and plans for a new hospital building were started.


◗ 1955 construction began on a new building on Fifth Street S.W.


◗ 1956 construction on a new nurses residence was started on the northeast side of the hospital.


◗ 1957 a 237-bed Medicine Hat Municipal Hospital and a 106-bed nurses residence was opened.


◗ 1963 the Dr. Dan MacCharles Auxiliary hospital was opened. ◗ 1971 the last class of nursing graduates took place.


◗ 1976 M.H. General Hospital and Dr. Dan Mac Charles Auxiliary Hospital amalgamated to create 337 beds for the M.H. & District Hospital.


◗ 1986 the hospital was expanded to have 446 beds and called Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.


Expansion of the hospital


◗ 2007 the Palliser Health Region Board asked the provincial government to contribute to towards an expansion of the hospital.


◗ 2011 a sod turning ceremony with Ed Stelmach, provincial premier at the time, and expected completion date of 2015 announced.


◗ 2012 (June) the Dr. Dan MacCharles Auxiliary Hospital was demolished to make way for the expansion.


◗ 2012 (October) Then Premier Alison Redford unveiled details of the expansion, construction budget of $220 million, and completion date of winter 2016.


◗ 2013 (October) the company that had the contract for concrete work went out of business and work came to a halt.


◗ Medicine Hat Regional Hospital celebrated its 125 anniversary in 2014.


◗ 2014 (March) media given first tour of the inside of the new wing.


◗ 2014 (September) Energy centre expansion and concrete superstructure complete.


◗ 2016 (July) landscaping done and new parking lot constructed. 10

◗ 2016 (November) Alberta Infrastructure expected to hand over to AHS by year end.


◗ 2017 (January) not yet handed over to AHS and helipad not yet approved by Transport Canada.
