Gardening Tips for February It's New


Year as I write this and a bit frosty. This will damage the tips of leaves on some shrubs, but resist the temptation to prune


them yet as there is still time for more damage. If we get any snow, shake it off the branches of trees or shrubs if possible or they may snap.  


In the borders cut back the dead foliage on deciduous grasses and remove dead grass from evergreen varieties before new growth appears.   and can be split if the clumps are too large.


 begonias they can be planted now. Place begonias in a tray of compost, slightly moistened, when they start making roots and showing shoots (this takes  planting out in containers and baskets later in the  compost and keep slightly moist. They must both be kept indoors and frost free for now.


If you want early tomato plants, you can sow the seeds now and half hardy annuals can be sown   sweet peas in the autumn they can still be planted  kept from last year can be potted into fresh soil, in  any that have been attacked by vine weevil.


If you have trouble with heavy or waterlogged soil, dig in some organic material such as manure or  general purpose fertiliser such as Growmore or  they attack young shoots on border plants.


If you have a vegetable plot, start to prepare for summer by raking over an area for seed growing.  veg peelings, shredded paper etc to the bottom of  potatoes will be available at nurseries now and  but frost free, spot in something like an egg tray and allowing them to produce shoots.
