LEGACY OF LEARNING

Family, Friends and Classmates Honor Michael Meyers ’08. Physicist and avid

outdoorsman Michael David Meyers ‘08 died on November 21, 2015 in an avalanche while climbing in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains near Lone Pine, California. He was 25 years old.

Michael is survived by his mother and father, David and Catherine, and brother, Will ’12. Instead of flowers, the Meyers family asked loved ones and friends to remember Michael by donating to the Saint John’s Prep science department. These generous gifts have provided new microscopes, new physics equipment, classroom science supplies and new rockets. Michael’s passion for science carries on each day at Saint John’s Prep. Our students use these important tools each day. From studying tiny organisms to launching rockets on the front lawn, Michael is inspiring the next generation of scientists.

Michael was working on his PhD. in Theorectical Physics at UCLA at the time of his accident. His research concentrated on the area of Plasma Physics. He authored and was co-author of many articles published in science journals.

IN HONOR OF... JERRY STREETER ‘52

Patrick ’52 and Gertrude Mingo

Michael’s passion for physics and the sciences began as a young student at Saint John’s Prep in Pete Froehle’s physics classes. Upon graduating from Prep, he was awarded a physics scholarship to attend Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa where he graduated Summa

Cum Laude in 2012. Michael was offered Fellowship grants to study physics at several prominent universities. He accepted a Fellowship at UCLA, where in 2014 he earned his Master’s Degree in Physics.
