49 Entertainment Stepni celebrate Bowie Antiques Fair visits Garden

There will be a huge range of welsh tapestry blankets on display with their extensive colour range and intrinsic patterns.” A selection of militaria stands will

display unusual items, including rare medals, military swords and vintage firearms. From furniture to fishing reels, Persian carpets to exquisite jewellery, most areas of collecting will be included, plus some rare items. One important collection to be

David Bowie: Starring in 1986’s ‘Labyrinth’ A YEAR since the death of the

music icon David Bowie, who would have celebrated his 70th birthday this month too, people all over the country have been paying tribute to the ‘Let’s Dance’ singer. Quite fittingly last week, many

celebrated Bowie’s legacy to music in some shape or form. This includes local radio station The Wave choosing to play a song an hour in honour of the legend’s hits.

Not only did radio stations opt to

celebrate his life and works, Llanelli’s local theatre was in-keeping with the trend. Stiwdio Stepni at Y Ffwrnes presented the 1986 film ‘Labyrinth’ on the big screen. The fantasy adventure musical starring David Bowie is renowned worldwide. The fantasy tale stars Bowie, who

plays fictitious Jareth, The Goblin King. Directed by Jim Henson and executive- producer George Lucas, this is a retro classic in its own right. Labyrinth presents 15-year-old Sarah

(Jennifer Connelly), who is resentful of her baby brother Toby and secretly wishes for him to vanish! Her wish is swiftly granted as the

goblins capture baby Toby. Feeling responsible and guilty about her sibling, she sets forth to rescue him. Along the

way, she gets engulfed in the fantasy adventure of a lifetime. Intent on succeeding, Sarah is set

the challenge of finding her way into the Goblin King’s castle, situated at the centre of a bizarre maze-filled Labyrinth, where Toby is captured. Nothing is as it seems in this fantasy

land and time is of the essence to save the little boy. Along the journey, Sarah encounters

quite a few strange creatures (Jim Henson creations), as well as mind-bending puzzles to solve. With a memorable soundtrack by

David Bowie and Trevor Jones, it’s not hard to see why this film has proven popular over the decades. Actor and British musician David

Bowie passed away on January 11, 2016 and was recently honoured at the infamous Oscar’s ceremony as well as receiving honour tributes at the 2016 Annual Brit Awards. Stiwdio Stepni is a highly

recommended venue, which seats up to 100 visitors. With various film screenings once a month at a mere £5 per ticket including refreshments, this is clear value for money. Tea, coffee and cake were inclusive in the ticket price.

Clash tribute at Te Parrot THE DERWEN ANTIQUES

FAIR, a treasure trove of the unusual and unique with a strong Welsh flavour, returns to the National Botanic Garden of Wales this weekend (Jan 28-29). Antiques, collectables, retro and

vintage will take centre stage among the rare and endangered blooms at the Carmarthenshire attraction. The Derwen Fair's flagship event

has increased from just 23 stalls in the early days to more than 100 dotted around the site, including Theatr Botanica, the Garden Marquee and the impressive Regency-era Principality House. Visitors can view Welsh art, Welsh

pottery and Welsh oak furniture among the Mediterranean plants in Lord Norman Foster’s Great Glasshouse, and a vintage market will take over the entire courtyard. Organiser Brita Rogers said:

“There are fewer antique fairs in Wales these days. We want to cater for everyone, from those interested in collecting traditional antiques to others looking for something a bit retro. We thought we would go with the times.” A large range of country pine

furniture, rare books, and Treen and Ewenny pottery will be on show,

along with taxidermy and the exotic. The Vintage Market houses smaller marquees showing off vintage toys, clothing and retro furniture, plus numerous up-cycled furniture and quirky items. Brita added: “The fair will

showcase Welsh areas of collecting, including Welsh pottery, Welsh art and furniture. Richard Bebb will be displaying a rich array of Welsh paintings, including artists such as Kyffin Williams. Welsh textiles will also be a main feature at the fair.

showcased is an interesting collection of Wemyss ware. This line of pottery hailed from Kirkcaldy in Fyfe, Scotland and is popular with collectors, with some rarer items commanding four figure sums. BBC TV’s ‘Bargain Hunt’

programme recently filmed at the Botanic Garden fair, with one contestant picking a rare Wemyss piece decorated with a daffodil to take to auction. Helen and Alistair, who sold the pot, are back to display their impressive Wemyss collection, including a rare heart-shaped inkwell. The Garden and the fair are open

from 10am to 4.30pm (last entry is 3.30pm). Admission to the garden is £3, with free parking.

London Calling: The UK’s premier Clash tribute band

THE UK’S premier Clash

tribute band are making their way to Carmarthen next month to perform some the punk band’s classic hits. London Calling will be taking to

The Parrot’s stage on February 24, with support from Mellt. The tribute band are currently on

their ‘White Riot’ tour, playing the first of Clash’s album, which was released in 1977.

London Calling was formed in 2004 as a one-off gig for charity and

to celebrate the life of Joe Strummer, After playing their short set, they were asked to play the whole 12-song set again, with half the audience joining them on the tiny stage. The band then decided to sharpen

their act and play regularly from that point.

The Clash fanatics have played in

the USA and Europe and have been in the Julien Temple and have directed a Joe Strummer film biography called ‘The Future is Unwritten’.
