Exceptional learners: Last year’s Inspire! Award winners

On display: Antique implements THE AUDIENCE at a recent

social event in Llandovery were delighted to receive a surprise visit from an ancient Welsh custom. The Mari Lwyd, a skeletal horse

which brings luck at the old Welsh New Year, had been visiting local inns accompanied by the Welsh Tune Club, before joining the members and guests of Llandovery History Society and Dyfed Family History Society in the

Castle Hotel where they were holding a fun evening to support the local museum, . Guests had braved the snowy

weather on January 13 to identify old and unusual kitchen and farm implements, supplied by Bob and Delyth Neil who had travelled from Derby but hail from Anglesey and Kidwelly respectively.

Volunteers wanted for Spring Clean Cymru

Keep Wales Tidy: Join volunteers from across Wales for Spring Clean Cymru

is looking for nominations of people, projects and employers whose learning achievements, often in the face of difficult circumstances, have changed lives in Wales. Winners will be invited to an

award ceremony which will take place in Cardiff in June, ahead of Adult Learners’ Week 2017, the largest celebration of adult learning in Europe. Nominations are free and open

to individuals or organisations involved in any form of adult learning,

accredited or non-accredited, in the classroom or in the home. The deadline for applications is March 3. Awards include Family Learner

of the Year, Young Adult Learner of the Year, Small Employer of the Year, Large Employer of the Year and Community Project of the Year. Cerys Furlong, Director at

Learning and Work Institute in Wales, said: “We are looking for people whose passion for learning will inspire others to return to or take up education. It’s always exciting when the new nominations start coming through and we get to discover inspirational stories from the local community. Some great people from across Wales have received recognition for their contributions in the past and we’re sure this year will be no different.”

For more information and to

submit a nomination, visit www. learningandwork.wales and click on the Inspire! Nominations link on the homepage. Entries are free, and nominees

should be individuals and organisations living and working in Wales involved in learning which is accredited or non- accredited and in any setting from workplace to classroom, in the home or in the community. Nominees must be aged 18 or over. Entrants for the individual

categories must be nominated by another person. This could be a friend, mentor, colleague, family member or employer.

Entries for the employer or project

categories should be endorsed by a senior manager.

KEEP WALES TIDY is launching

a brand new litter campaign – Spring Clean Cymru – to encourage people across Wales to get together this St David’s Day and help care for our beautiful country. Community groups, schools and

businesses will all be taking part in five days of action from March 1-5. The campaign is part of the Great

British Spring Clean, which is supported by TV naturalist and writer Steve Backshall, the BAFTA-winning Deadly 60 presenter. Steve said: “Litter dropped in a

British street is a horror show for wildlife. So many animals are injured and even die from the things we throw away. This

is such an important issue and I’m proud to be supporting the campaign.” Lesley Jones, Chief Executive for

Keep Wales Tidy, said: “We know a good quality environment matters to people and the benefits can have a big impact on our communities, health and well-being and economy. That’s why we want to inspire the people of Wales to get outdoors, be proud and help care for where they live. “Just two hours spent picking up

litter can make a huge difference to the local environment.” Register your clean-up at

keepwalestidy.cymru or visit the website to find out how you can get involved.
