APPOINTMENTS & NEWS RENEWABLE ENERGY

Government backs plans for tidal lagoon in Swansea Bay

Plans for the world’s first tidal power lagoon have been backed by Ministers. The scheme, on which LDA Design are masterplanners and lead designers, is to “spark the regenera- tion of Swansea Bay,” as well as generating clean energy from tidal movement. LDA Design has included “visionary

placemaking infrastructure” in the master- plan including a new maritime park with sports facilities and public realm linking to the city centre. It’s being hoped the project will “unlock” multi-billion plans for five additional plants that could provide a tenth of the UK’s electricity needs.

AIRPORTS Heathrow appoints Benoy

Global design firm Benoy has been appointed to the commercial masterplan- ning team working on the Heathrow Airport expansion. The company will support lead architect

Grimshaw in delivering “site-wide enhance- ments” across all five terminals – set to be extended to six with the addition of the airport’s third runway. Benoy CEO Tom Cartledge said: “We are

committed to seeing Heathrow continue to become a fully integrated and sustainable airport, which will drive innovation and

showcase the best of British design, and we can’t wait to get started.” Barry Weekes, head of design at

Heathrow Airport, added: “We are very pleased to welcome Benoy with their com- mercial masterplanning expertise to our design team, and know they will add value and experience to our ambitious design and engineering schedule.” In 2016, Benoy vied for the concept

design commission of the extended airport alongside Zaha Hadid Architects, HOK and the eventual winners Grimshaw.

New Exeter benches for roof top terrace

The new seven-storey University of Exeter Living Systems Institute was due to be completed in Autumn 2016. Working closely with the contractor, Benchmark designed and manufactured a new Exeter range to complement the architecture of

the courtyard roof terrace. Benchmark developed benches that followed the planter retaining walls to create three unique separate spaces where staff and students can sit and enjoy the views. The new range is manufactured from Iroko hardwood with laser profiled aluminium legs. It is assembled using a stainless steel tube system.
