They are four totally different horses. The World Champi- onship is the result of a week. Peter Wylde: Doing away with the Final Four, I believe, is the best decision for three different reasons. First for the horse, after having jumped five rounds, then jumping two more with four different riders. Horses come out of it tired and sore, and some have damage from it—not permanent damage, but still from that perspective, it’s a good thing to eliminate it. Second, I believe show jumping is the relationship between

a great rider and a great horse. Think about the horse and rider combinations at the Olympic Games and World Champion- ship. To put an emphasis on the rider alone, I think it belittles the horse. It should be the horse and rider. Third, I don’t agree that the Final Four picks the worthiest

World Champion. There are so many factors in the start order and the rotation. On the horse, it can be the best rider, the worst rider, a medium rider. Every rider has a different style. That ride can affect the horse for his next performance. As horse trainers, we all know that the previous class has an effect on the next performance. So you see top riders in a previous class will ride slow and careful. That tells you there is an effect of the previous round on the next one. In Jerez it was a big deal for me to be in the situation I was in. I felt it was important for me to be positive in what I was

Second Decision: ELIMINATE THE SPEED ROUND

Last year the FEI also removed Competition 1, the speed round, from the World Championship. Here are a few reactions to the speed round, then and now.

George Morris, 2006: Authentic is a very quick

horse across the ground and a very quick horse over the fences. Beezie epitomizes what I preach—the forward seat—and that of course is faster. I put her as the anchor on this leg. She is so fast and the horse is so fast. That was impeccable and of course she won the class. [Authentic went on to lead all 116 horses after five rounds, with a single fault at a water jump.] Peter Wylde, 2017: Conrad and I talked about them

doing away with the speed leg as well. That to me is a huge mistake. That part of the World Championship is really an important part of determining the World Champion because of the skill factor and the relation- ship factor to be able to ride the fast speed round. To ask that question of a horse and rider combination: Can you jump fast well, then come back and ride four good power rounds? That to me shows skill, horseman- ship and talent, to ride around fast without hollowing, disrupting or irritating your horse, and then go on to jump four real rounds. That is a big skill test and one factor of determining the World Champion. To do away with it, that takes away a lot of the skill factor.
