ublisher’s Welcome

When the Super Bowl Speaks Loud and Clear

hile I’m not much of a football junkie, most of my family is. So every year I try to watch the Super Bowl, but I’m usually bored by the time the halſtime show begins and call it a night before the game ends.

At first, this year’s game wasn’t much different. By halſtime the Patriots were seriously losing, 21–3. “Tere’s no hope for the Patriots,” I

announced, stating what I thought was the obvious as the Falcons appeared unstoppable. Others in the room immediately disagreed. “Don’t underestimate Tom Brady and his team,” they said. While the country was watching Lady Gaga, they explained, the Patriots would spend halſtime re-strategizing and would make tactical adjustments for the second half. Tey agreed there was hope for a comeback. In the third quarter, Falcons scored once again and the score became 28–3. (Could it get any worse for the Patriots?) What happened next was, by all accounts, history in the making. With the biggest deficit on record in any Super Bowl, the Patriots started

making their comeback. In the final minute of the game, they tied it up 28–28. Aſter winning the coin toss, it didn’t take long for the Patriots to score again in overtime, clinching their fiſth Super Bowl win and setting yet another record. Whether you like the Patriots or not, you have to admire their tenacity and uncanny ability to overcome what appeared to be a losing

battle. Teir story will be an inspiration to many, probably for decades to come. Aſter all the hype about the game’s outcome, upon reflection I was most struck by the team’s message of hope. And as I look at many of

our stories in this issue, that same message comes through loud and clear. I’ll start with an update on the Colorado Terapy Horses (page 22), the Trakehner herd helping children and adults, including our veterans with PTSD. Te whole premise of the program’s therapy focuses on hope for healing with empowerment, which is why it has grown enough to help more than 6,000 people last year. It’s been amazing to watch this unique nonprofit program expand since we first covered it in 2014. Its founder’s dream to build a large facility to reach even more people is now coming true. Last year we got wind of a new treatment of melanoma, a form of cancer that plagues many of our horses, especially the grays. We’ve been

following the research and are happy to report (on page 58) that recent tests have proven this drug is able to stop this disease in its tracks. We also catch up with Ann Romney, who has battled multiple sclerosis for almost twenty years. Her message of hope isn’t new but it

is a strong one; she has worked hard to make it into the Grand Prix ring with her dressage horses despite the challenges she faces. See her interview on page 49. On page 43, show jumping pundit Michael Meller speaks candidly about the future of the sport. He shares his experiences and his

successes, as well as strategies he hopes will encourage our country to produce better horses. While you may or may not agree with his ideas, I think you will admire his passion. Tis issue presents even more features and advice, including an update on Hanoverian horses from the American Hanoverian Society.

Want a safer way to jump cross country? Read what eventing trainers have to say about the concept of “Fiſth Leg” training on page 29. And Boyd Martin, in his column on page 90, hopes you’ll consider giving both yourself and your horses a training break. As riders, owners and trainers of these wonderful sport horses, do we exude confidence, strength and the belief that we, our horses and

our students can get to the next level or overcome a difficult task in Tom-Brady-style? In a pre-game interview with Terry Bradshaw on Fox Sports, Tom explained his leadership style: “When they get in the huddle with me, I want to look in their eyes and I want them to feel a belief that we’re gonna do it.” I can’t speak for the world, Tom, but I got your message, loud and clear.
