Dermott Lennon, 2002: I’m flabbergasted to be here. I’m
looking forward to riding them all. I’ve rode worse ones. I ride a lot of young horses at home.
LEARNING THE HORSES Those who’ve ridden a lot of horses at a busy barn have an advantage in this phase of the competition. Like catch riders, they can successfully jump the course without ruining the horse for others. The four riders may share information with the others, watch videos, or just watch the horses. Here’s how some of those competitors strategized as they prepared for their rides: Greg Best, 1990: I did the best that I could do to help them [the other riders]. I let them know what I knew about the horse, to give them a better shot at doing well. I think it’s only fair. It’s the only sportsmanlike thing to do. I told them exactly how to ride the horse. Ride forward, be very soft and be aggressive. Not a lot of hand. To be aggressive, ride forward. That horse is at his best when he is going forward. Rodrigo talked about the help from his father, Nelson.
He told me to stay quiet on Calvaro and let the horse do the work, because he was getting very nervous. I did that. Today I tried to use everything I’ve learned over the years and put it into the horses I was riding. Nelson’s observations were
good, to do
this or that. The tips from someone with so much experience were very good. Three minutes isn’t a lot of time to learn about a horse. I watched

the other horses just to see if I could find out something. I watched a video once last night and once this morning. Franke Sloothak, 1998: The horses are here at the final and
they all have the quality. Don’t think about the situation. Just approach the horse the way you think is best. Peter Wylde, 2002: The first horse I ride is Eric’s. Eric is such an unbelievably good rider. He is an incredibly tactful rider. He rides so the horse is absolutely perfect. Dermott Lennon, 2002: I watched all three horses canter
around this morning. Beezie Madden, 2006: Shutterfly, Pialotta, and Authentic are
all going to be fairly similar. With our system of equitation in the states, we have a lot of experience as juniors switching horses.
I’ve ridden a lot of
different horses in my career and have quite a string of horses now.
Jos Lansink, 2006: I’ve done it a few times before, and I ride a
lot of different horses so it is not a problem. Cumano has a lot of energy. He is a very strong horse. I ride him two times a day to get him fit for the championship. People ask about tomorrow with the women riders on my
