Shangri-La opens first resort and spa in Sri Lanka
Amie Keeley in Sri Lanka
Luxury chain Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has opened its first property in Sri Lanka.
The 300-room Shangri-La
Hambantota Resort & Spa is the first five-star hotel in Hambantota, located on the south coast, a four- hour-plus drive from Colombo’s international airport. The resort features an 18-hole
golf course, spa and its own artisan village showcasing local craft-making. Bosses at the beachfront hotel
said the location represented a new destination for luxury travel, with relatively untouched land,
“Sri Lanka was an obvious choice for us – it’s a peaceful country”
golden beaches and a year-round warm climate with less rainfall than other parts of the country. The hotel, which opened in June,
arrives as the area undergoes various developments following the 2004 tsunami and the end of the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009. Set across 60 hectares, the
resort is broadly divided into two: one side for families, with a children’s pool and extensive kids’ play area, the other for adults and honeymooners.
