Mitsubishi Electric’s SeaAerial antenna uses seawater plume Mitsubishi Electric
Corporation revealed the new SeaAerial on Jan. 27, an inno- vative radio aerial that replaces steel and wire with a column of seawater. According to
Gizmag.com,
the SeaAerial uses a column of seawater sprayed into the air to create a radio transceiver antenna. The device designed for use at sea and along shore- lines is described as the world’s first seawater antenna capable of receiving digital terrestrial broadcasts, accord- ing to Mitsubishi Electric.

Mitsubishi Electric devel- oped an insulated nozzle transmitting radio waves to the antenna when the plume of water is physically connect- ed to the sea surface. “One of the challenges was
to secure antenna efficiency, or the ratio of radiated power to input power, because sea- water is much less conductive than metal. Mitsubishi Electric used simulations to determine the ideal diameter of the plume, resulting in an efficiency level of 70 percent, which is sufficient for sending and receiving signals,” as stat-

Four new algae species discovered in Hawaii
Scientists working with NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries announced the dis- covery of four new species of deep-water algae from Hawai'i. Marine algae, or limu, are very
important in Hawaiian culture, used in foods, ceremonies and as adornments in traditional hula.
al researcher at the University of Hawai'i Department of Botany and lead author of the study, said, “I was astounded at the abundance and size of these algae, which resembled some- thing you would see in a shallow- water lagoon, not at 400 feet.” Spalding has been collaborat- ing with NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries for several years studying samples collected by NOAA divers work-
ing in Papāhanaumokuākea Marine National Monument. She and her colleagues at the University of Hawai'i and University of Washington’s FridayHarbor Laboratories con- ducted DNA analyses that showed that the species are very different than those found in Hawaii’s shallow waters, even

ed by Mitsubishi Electric in a pre- pared statement. Unlike many
radio installations that require large antenna, are bulky and difficult to transport, the SeaAerial can be installed onshore and offshore, and can be transported by vessels and ships. The set up
requires a pump and an insulated nozzle.

though they are very similar in appearance. The species were sampled during surveys between 2013
and 2015 in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument by NOAA divers using advanced SCUBA diving technologies, and during past NOAA expeditions from 2006 to 2014 throughout the Main Hawaiian Islands using submersibles operated by the Hawai i Undersea Research Laboratory. Scientists anticipate that many additional new species of algae will be described in the coming years from samples col- lected by NOAA divers on future expeditions to the monument.

Oman hosting first of 2016 World Series Feb. 27-28
SAN DIEGO— America’s Cup rac- ing will be held in the Middle
East for the first time when the America’s Cup World Series is sailed in Muscat, Oman on Feb. 27-28. A point scoring event for the opening stages of the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017, the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series in Oman is the curtain raiser to the 2016 season, which will be spread over six dif- ferent venues around the world, including two in the United States. It’s a surprising choice, consid- ering that American billionaire Larry Ellison opposed the region as the venue for the 2010 America’s Cup, citing in part safe- ty concerns because of its prox- imity to Iran. Teams from the United States,
New Zealand, France, England, Sweden and Japan are part of the America’s Cup World Series circuit — a series of regattas leading up to the 2017 America’s See NEWS BRIEFS page 15
