OCEAN FISHING REPORT By Terrence Berg

MEXICAN YELLOWTAIL: The 1.5-day boats out of San Diego continue to see good mixed bags of yellowtail and rockfish action, with most of the boats focusing in the Colonet and San Martin Island region. The weather made these trips less consistent than they had been, howev- er. The two best trips the weekend of Jan. 30 had near limits of yellowtail. The 28 anglers aboard Vagabond out of Point Loma Sportfishing landed 103 yellowtail, while the 35 anglers on Pacific Queen out of Fisherman’s Landing had 152 yellowtail and 70 rockfish. Dominator, also out of Point Loma, had 19 anglers on its 1.5-day trip and landed 31 yellow- tail, 70 rockfish, two barracuda, and two lingcod. Chief out of H&M Landing had 18 anglers and landed 26 yellowtail and 103 rockfish. On Jan. 28 Pacific Voyager out of Seaforth Sportfishing was on a 1.5-day trip with 17 anglers and land- ed 43 yellowtail and 85 rockfish.
CORONADO ISLANDS YELLOWTAIL UPDATE: The yellowtail bite stayed solid at the Coronado Islands through much of last week for the San Diego three-quarter day fleet, but conditions deteriorated late in the week and through the weekend and the bite fell off. Mission Belle out of Point Loma tracked the decline of the yellow-
tail bite at the Coronado Islands going into the stormy weekend. On Jan. 27 its three-quarter day trip with 18 anglers produced 47 yellows along with four rockfish and two bonito. The Friday trip with 18 fishermen saw 15 yellowtail hit the deck in addition to three rockfish and one calico bass, while Saturday’s trip with 32 anglers produced no yellows, but the anglers managed to land 40 rockfish, two whitefish, and one sheephead. Pacific Voyager out of Seaforth Sportfishing was on a three-quarter day trip on Friday with 23 anglers and landed eight yellow- tail, 15 rockfish, 10 lingcod, five bonito, five whitefish, four barracuda, four calico bass and three sheephead.
LOCAL BITES: Outside of the San Diego-based fleet there has been very light fishing activity all along the Southern California coast over the past week. A few boats are making half-day trips for sculpin, smatterings of bass (both calico and sand bass), perch and lots of sand dabs. A couple of examples: New Del Mar out of Marina del Rey Sportfishing was on a Saturday half-day on Jan. 30 with 43 anglers and landed 131 sculpin, 50 perch, four calico bass and three sand bass. Redondo Special out of Redondo Sportfishing was on a half-day on Jan. 30 and the 21 anglers on board had 57 sculpin and 210 sand dabs. On its Jan. 29 half-day the eight anglers on board had 12 perch and one legal calico bass — but the anglers released 37 short calicos and 15 short sand bass. Those types of scores have been pretty typical. There continues
to be some local yellowtail and white seabass showing for private boaters along the coast and at Catalina Island. Brian Fagan, Poway, caught a 74.2-pound white seabass while fishing from a kayak off La Jolla last Thursday fishing a 6-inch mackerel at first light in nearly 100 feet of water.
LOBSTER ACTION: The lobster action has con- tinued to be good for the hard-core hoop net- ters, especially at Catalina and the other local islands. The nearshore bite is a little tougher with an awful lot of short bugs. Gail Force and Triton out of LA Harbor
Sportfishing had lobster trips Thursday through Sunday evenings each week and both boats had limits or near-limits this past weekend, even with the unsettled weather. Jig Strike out of H&M Landing was on a twilight lobster trip Jan. 31 and the six anglers had nine legal lobster and released 47 shorts.
INSTRUCTIONAL CHARTERS: The staff of 976- TUNA is hosting instructional charters through- out the season, offering advice to beginning or veteran anglers and on-the-water teaching of techniques for different saltwater species. These trips are over for the season. Check 976-
TUNA.com or call 562-352-0012 for details.
