Super 12 yachts will be 1 minute per mile faster than 12s

SANTA ANA (AP) —The lead designer for the new Super 12 Class says the racing yachts will sail on average one minute per mile faster than the 12 Meter yachts that raced in America’s Cup from 1958 through 1987. The Super 12s will compete annually in

the San Francisco Yacht Racing Challenge for the Super 12 Cup beginning in July 2017.

Britt Ward of Farr Yacht Design in

Annapolis, Maryland, said that target speeds would be nine knots upwind in 20 knots true wind and 12 knots downwind. They would be 8.5 knots upwind and 9.5 knots downwind in 12 knots. The one-design yachts will be made of

composite materials and will be lighter than the venerable 12 Meters. The Super 12s are a modern take on the classic 12 Meter yachts. A new rule- legal 12 Meter has not been built in three decades. The yachts will be built at Westerly

“Spirit of N2E” by local artist Carole Boller NOSA announces annual artist

NEWPORT BEACH – Officials with the Newport Ocean Sailing Association have announced Carole Boller has been com- missioned to create the annual signatory Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race artwork. Boller’s completed work for the 2016 race is a painting titled “Spirit of N2E.” The painting will be officially unveiled at a NOSA event just prior to the 69th annual N2E race that starts off the Balboa Pier on April 22. Boller said NOSA Commodore David

Shockley’s directives for the annual piece of art – a tradition of the organization since the 1960s – was to create an image depicting an abundance of effort and energy, the strong wills of participating sailors and be a tribute to the event’s rela- tionship with Mexico. Complimenting sailing and the story of

the race, the finished work depicts the dawn following an all-night sail, showing countless boats with spinnakers up along the final stretch. In the foreground is a subtle illusion of the American and Mexican flags waving in the water fractals. Images of the painting will be used on

the cover of the event program, on select promotional materials and on racewear to be sold online and at pre-race parties. Following the race, board members decide the painting’s destiny. The works of art have been donated to charity, gifted to the local mayor, auctioned for charity or bequeathed to the commodore as a thank you.

Boller, a highly accomplished local artist and sailor also created the 2007

cept design review meetings with Westerly Marine officials. Farr Yacht Design will take those deci- sions and input and move into the prelim- inary design stage this month.
