Golfing for a Great Cause

More and more over the years, high school students (and their parents) have become programmed to think that a four-year college degree is the only next step on their way to achieving financial success and job satisfaction. Apart from an epidemic of unpaid student loans, what this has resulted in is a significant and growing deficit in the number of needed skilled workers in trades like construction, interior design, etc. To help counteract the trend away from careers specifically in the building sector, the ACE Mentor Program was established. ACE encourages high school students all over the country to consider futures in Architecture, Construction and Engineering. Through ACE, actual construction professionals act as mentors, students get real hands-on experience and scholarships are awarded to help them move forward in their education and careers.

In Sacramento, ACE has been active since 2007. And as of 2014, NKBA California Capital Chapter and NARI of Greater Sacramento have joined forces to host an annual golf tournament to support ACE’s efforts.

The NKBA/NARI Summer Golf Classic has continued to grow every year since, both in the number of participants and the variety of

activities they will enjoy. There’s no doubt that they certainly get their money’s worth over the course of a very full day.

At hole one, the tee off is actually accomplished with a “golf bazooka” which, as the name certainly suggests, propels a golf ball down the fairway. From there, mostly normal play continues for the rest of the course. During and after all of those fun and games, golfers and non-golfers alike are able to round out their day with lunch, games and a putting contest, followed by dinner, a silent auction and other raffles.

Every aspect of the golf tournament is sponsored by NKBA/ NARI members. The entire event is sponsored by one or more local companies, with other area businesses sponsoring each individual hole, various awards and food and drink venues.

In addition to having a genuinely great time, NKBA/NARI Summer

Golf Classic participants know that they are supporting a great cause. Ultimately, support of the ACE Program helps to broaden the pool of new building tradespeople. It also helps to ensure that that next generation of building professionals will be well-educated, happy and enthusiastic.

2017 NKBA/NARI Summer Golf Classic participants can join in as individuals or foursomes. As of this printing, location, date and ticket prices for the tournament haven’t been confirmed (although it normally occurs at the end of August). Check back periodically at narisacto.org for the most up-to-date information.
