Use cash machines with even more care than you would exercise at home.
Cover the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN and never write your PIN down. If you suspect the machine’s card slot has been tampered with, don't use it.
Always scrutinise your bill and the credit card receipt and be wise to scams such as the addition of extra noughts to your bill in a restaurant or bar. If you don't spot the mistake until you get home, it will be too late to do anything about it.
Guard against double charging, where a vendor pretends to have made an error on the bill and asks you to sign again - so you end up paying twice. If you are asked to sign a second credit card docket, ask if you can pay the difference in cash instead. If that's not possible, make sure you don't sign the second docket unless the vendor gives you a printed cancellation of the first.

Skimming
When you hand over your card on a holiday or business trip, you run the risk the card will be ‘skimmed’ by unscrupulous waiters, shop assistants and bar staff. The ‘skimming’ process reads the magnetic strip on your card, so ensuring that the data can be downloaded on to another card and used as if it was the original. Never leave your card behind a bar and, when making a transaction, try not to let anyone take your card away. Go with the vendor to the till or ask for the card imprinter/PIN machine to be brought to your table.
If this fraud happens to you, contact your card issuer immediately. If the card has been skimmed rather than stolen, your issuer should cover the losses.
