Online IP crime
The sharing of material protected by IP via digital platforms such as websites and social media is illegal and has become a growing menace in recent years. Additionally, online sources have facilitated the sale and purchase of counterfeit and pirated goods.
Physical IP crime
Physical IP crime covers the counterfeiting of branded goods such as clothing, tobacco, pharmaceuticals, alcohol, electrical accessories, CDs, DVDs and mobile phones.
Protect yourself against IP Fraud
A search tool called Brand-i will direct you to the official websites of popular brands. Otherwise, a few simple checks when shopping online will reassure you that any website you visit is genuine and safe.
You may find these tips handy when browsing for goods online:
• Be aware that ‘
co.uk’ in the web address does not guarantee that it is a UK site. Although shopping from overseas websites is relatively safe it may be difficult to enforce your contract if problems arise.
• If the item or service costs over £100 consider paying by credit card, as you will have some redress against the credit card company.
• Make sure that the trader has a physical address, not just a PO Box or email address and beware of websites that can only be contacted via email. You can check who owns the relevant site on
www.domaintools.com and verify the business’s registration details at
www.companieshouse.gov.uk.
• If paying online, check that the site concerned has a secure payment facility incorporating an encryption device, and that ‘https://’ and a padlock symbol can be seen on the web page when personal information and payment details are requested. Check also for clear privacy and returns policies.

What to do if you have been the victim of IP Fraud
If you have paid by credit card and your purchase is over £100, you can claim your money back from the credit card company concerned. If you have paid by debit card, or your purchase is under £100, the Chargeback system may be applicable. Chargeback allows you to ask your card provider to reverse a transaction, though your bank is not legally obliged to refund you under this system. For further details visit
