Because bank accounts and credit card usage – corporate and personal – are monitored constantly for unusual activity, you should always advise banks and credit card companies before going abroad and check that the cards themselves are not due to expire during the trip.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE continued

Have you arranged adequate insurance and funds?

Ensure that you have comprehensive travel insurance cover, including emergency medical repatriation.

Check you have sufficent cash and other means of accessing funds. It is always wise to take some back-up funds in the form of traveller’s cheques, sterling or US dollars.

What valuable information and items are you taking with you?

Take copies of important travel documents and store them online using a secure data storage site. As an extra precaution, photocopy your passport and take copies with you and take note of the number.

Consider how you will keep your other valuables safe and whether it is essential to take them.

How are you travelling and where are you staying?

If your company uses an external travel organiser or agent to make travel and accommodation arrangements, make sure that it has a policy for refunds and for bringing travellers home if the airline or hotel goes bankrupt.

If you are reliant on your host to arrange your accommodation, work space, travel and your schedule, it is important to be clear about these arrangements in advance.

Remember airports are a security vulnerability and taxi services, car hire and public transport provision may vary. The remainder of this guide provides advice on these and other specific aspects of keeping safe while travelling.
