You should never assume you are as protected abroad as you are at home. Electrical Safety Council

FIRE SAFETY

Differences across the world in fire codes, building and electrical standards, and even fire fighting capabilities all increase the threat of fire to business travellers. But if fire safety regulations and approaches to prevention differ greatly from country to country, one fact is inarguable: being prepared and being vigilant saves lives, wherever in the world one may happen to be.

Fire precautions

Panic and smoke are the most dangerous threats in the case of a fire, so if possible use only hotels that have comprehensive fire precautions in place, such as sprinkler installation and smoke detectors. If this is difficult to ascertain, play safe by booking

a room on a lower floor, ideally facing the road so you are close to fire engines as they arrive. (As mentioned earlier, it is recommended to stay between the third and sixth floor to avoid being the victim of crime.) Stay below the seventh floor, because few fire engine ladders can reach above it.

Your route to the fire exit

In your hotel, trace your route to the fire exit and memorise it. A useful tip is to count the number of doors between your room and the exit: if there is a fire, you may have to crawl there in the dark. Exit doors should be unlocked and stairwells kept clear of obstructions. Note the location of fire alarms and where extinguishers and hoses are sited. Check outside your room window to see if there

is a possible escape route that would be feasible in an emergency.

Always keep a torch by your bed or about your person. If fire breaks out, most lights go out. A torch may save your life by pointing you in the right direction.
