Your personal information

Avoid displaying personal information on luggage or personal property and remove your name badge after business meetings. Use your first initial instead of your first name when registering, so anyone accessing the hotel records is not aware of your gender.

What to wear

At the airport wearing comfortable flat shoes and having a handy carry-on bag on wheels will help you move quickly through.

Some business women who travel regularly wear a wedding ring to avoid unwanted male attention. Keep jewellery to a minimum: in some locations even modest diamonds might be worth what anyone there might earn in a year.

Generally, the safest option is to remain below the radar as much as possible and try to blend in discreetly with local customs and culture.

Using Taxis

If possible, do not travel alone at night or in quiet areas.

Use only registered taxis and avoid hailing one in the street: where possible, pre-book a taxi from the hotel, on the principle that you choose the taxi rather than letting the taxi choose you. (Currently, Dubai is offering cabs with female drivers catering specifically for women, and a comparable service may be available in other countries or cities.)

If available locally, keep a phone card handy and enough cash for a cab, as well as the hotel's business card.

It always helps to know some key phrases in the local language.
