to an incident, they can be problematic for passengers, pilots and air traffic controllers alike. If there was any possibility that the use of electronic devices would cause serious prob- lems, they would have been banned from the cabin entirely. Critical aircraft equipment is unlikely to be affected; how-
ever, cell phone use can become annoying for pilots trying to communicate with air traffic control. If you’ve ever heard the electromagnetic interference from placing two devices close together, you know that it can be hard to communicate through the feedback. Te problem lies in the fact that cellphones were not de- signed to hop from tower to tower at the speeds experienced during flight. Tis not only led to rapid battery depletion for the passenger as their phone boosted its signal trying to maintain a connection but also degraded the ground networks themselves. New Wi-Fi providers such as Gogo Inflight In- ternet provide ground-to-air cell service over North America with towers that have been designed specifically for inflight use. Tese towers face their signals skyward. Most devices can access Wi-Fi even on airplane mode; however cellular signals are still blocked. Today passengers have more options when it comes to using
devices onboard their flight. However, it is best to check with your airline as it is up to their discretion if and when you can use devices on their aircraft. Not all air carriers provide Wi-Fi either. Carriers need to apply and prove to Transport Canada that devices will not interfere with navigation or communica- tion systems.
What devices and services are available?
Not all airlines offer the same services, and it is, therefore, best to check with them prior to boarding. Here is some information we have gathered from airlines flying out of YWG from their websites.
WestJet offers passengers inflight entertainment with the download of the WestJet Connect app.
Air Canada’s app offers similar benefits and inflight enter- tainment for Air Canada Rouge. Some planes haven’t been converted to the new system, so check before you board.
United's app allows passengers to download inflight entertainment on their own devices.
Delta offers an app where passengers can purchase inflight Wi-Fi.
NewLeaf allows use of electronics aboard Flair Airlines at cruising only.
Transat has an inflight app for movies and entertainment.
Sunwing does not have an app but continues to offer complimentary inflight movies and champagne service.
Some airlines also offer USB plug-ins on seat armrests, so your devices are always fully charged.
