Bonhomme Carnaval in front of Québec City. Québec Winter Carnaval

carnival which will be held in 2017 from Jan. 27 to Feb. 12. More than 500,000 visitors come from all over the world an- nually to take in the festivities. Te mas- cot of the festival is Bonhomme Carna- val, a giant snowman wearing a red toque and a ceinture fléchée, an arrowed sash, so named for its design. Tis is the of- ficial sash of the carnival. Made of wool, the ceinture was tied over the coats and around men’s waists in the early days to keep out the cold. he City of Québec loves to celebrate winter and have been doing so since 1894, and an- nually since 1955.

Over 200 events are featured during the

tion to the Red River Settlement. One of the highlights of the festival

is the ice palace, official home of Bon- homme Carnaval. It is rebuilt on a dif- ferent plan each year, and open to those who have an effigy, a button that signi- fies that you have bought a passport that lets you into most events. Tere are out- door dance parties held at the ice palace, and the drink of choice is the Caribou, a concoction of hot red wine, whiskey, and maple syrup, served with cinnamon and lemon. Sometimes cloves and nutmeg are added.

Te ice palace is not to be confused with the Ice Hotel, which is a real ac- commodation. Captivating snow sculptures, some of them quite fantastical, are carved by art-

ists out of huge blocks of ice and snow in an international contest. Teir work will make you marvel at the inspiration that goes into something so ethereal. Tere is so much to see and do at the

Carnaval. You can take a dog sled ride, or a more sedate regular sleigh ride, tucked under warm blankets, pulled by some mighty Clydesdales. Watch the fascinat- ing snow-canoeing from a warm indoor vantage point. Kids and adults alike love the maple taffy. Festi Lumiére is a fairyland of over 500,000 lights where you can go snow- tubing or play one of the other inflat- able games. Tere are outdoor fireplaces to keep you warm as you stroll through the magical light projections in the en- chanted forest.
