Man in court in rape case


A 25-YEAR-OLD man charged with five counts of rape has ap- peared in Maidstone Magistrates’ Court by video link. Mateusz Sura, from Tottenham,


north London,was arrested by offi- cers investigating a sex attack al- leged to have taken place inWallis Avenue, Maidstone. All of the charges relate to the


same incident against one victim who is not known to Sura. He has been remanded in cus-


tody to appear again at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on Monday, January 16. Officers are still appealing for anyone with information, who has not yet spoken to the police, to get in touch. This includes a white man, ap- proximately 5ft 8ins tall, slim and aged between 20 and 25. He was wearing black Chino-type trousers and a black hooded top and was seen standing in a grassed area on the corner of Bell Road and Wallis Avenue between about 5.30pm and 7pm.

Yobs deface statue to hero of Light Brigade


GRAFFITI vandals who daubed obscenities in pink paint on a Maidstone memorial to one of the nation’swar heroes should face the full force of the law. That was the view of Gordon Newton following the attack on the monument he designed and built to honour Charge of the Light Brigade hero Captain Louis Nolan. Sickening language was sprayed


on two sides of the memorial - com- missioned by Maidstone Council and unveiled in 2013 in Church Street, where Captain Nolan lived and worshipped. More pink paint was found in nearby Marsham Street following the attack on Satur- day, November 24. Gordon Newton, who is a bor-


ough councillor and owns the Stone Shop at East Farleigh, and his stone mason colleague Ian Acott, were quick to respond on hearing of the attack, armed with toothbrush-size wire brushes to perform the painstaking work to scrub away the paint, which took two days. Cllr Newton said: “Thiswas not a personal attack on Captain Nolan, just yobs. It demonstrates a lack of

respect and brings disgrace on Maidstone. I hope the culprits are caught and dealt with in court with the severity they deserve.” He said the memorial to Captain


Nolan – outside Maidstone’s old eye hospital – remains important in that it sets the record straight for the “much maligned” war hero and one-time master in charge of the cavalry at Maidstone Barracks. He added: “He led the charge on
