Music festival’s ‘bigger in 2017’

BILLED as Kent’s “biggest little music festival”, Vicar’s Picnic will be back this year and organisers promise it will be bigger and better than ever. In 2016, the event celebrated its

third year as a multi-day family fes- tival on the banks of the River Med- way at Yalding. Vicar’s Picnic began as a garden

party for villagers who had missed out on tickets for Glastonbury, and was named because of its origin in Vicarage Road. The first event took place in Sep- tember but hasmoved forward to its current spot and has expanded from a one-day gig to a two-day festival with camping, two music stages, a children’s play area and a poetry and comedy tent. The festival will take place on July

14 and 15, and a limited number of early bird tickets are on sale at the village’s post office, Village Tea Rooms, Walnut Tree public house and the Chequers Inn, Laddingford. They can also be bought online at www.vicarspicnic.co.uk. Organisers say talks with possible acts are well advanced and it is

hoped that headliners will be renowned artists. In previous years, these have included Reef, Cast and Mark Morris of the Bluetones. The event also likes to give emerg-

ing local artists a platform to per- form to a wider audience and has been a showcase for The Standard Lamps (touring with The Who) and Youth (touring with Slaves). Founder Dave King said: “You

can’t put a price on the buzz you get from the look on people’s faces when you have put on a great event.” Vicar’s Picnic was nominated for

three festival awards this year - fi- nalist in the Association of Inde- pendent Festivalawards for the Best Small Festival and shortlisted for the National Outdoor Events awards and in four categories at theUKFes- tival Awards. Dave added: “Al- though we didn’t win, it was fantastic that we were recognised and got to rub shoulders with the or- ganisers, including Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis.” Several local charities have bene-

fited from the festival which has also bought a defibrillator for the village.

Ducks make splash for hospice

YOUNG Puddle Ducks had fun splashing around in their pyjamas at Sut- ton Valence School to raise £2,655 for Kent’s Pilgrims’ Hospices. The swim school, whose members range in age froma few months to 10

years old, holds aweek-long charity PJs event at this time of year to boost water safety and survival skills. Puddle Ducks’ members chose to support Kent’s three Pilgrims’ Hos-

pices, which have been providing palliative care for 30 years. Victoria Rowley, fromthe East Kent branch of Puddle Ducks, said: “All of

our Puddle Ducks have been brilliant! Not only did they complete their per- sonal survival lesson in their pyjamas, but also a five-metre swim at the end of the lesson – some assisted, of course, by their grown-ups.”

New cooker

MARDEN Memorial Hall users are enjoying a new cooker thanks to a £657 mem- ber’s grant from Kent County councillor, Paulina Stockell. Groups who use the kitchen

area, including the pre-school, said they were delighted with the much-needed replacement.

Shed break-ins

POLICE are investigating a spate of break-ins at garages and sheds acrosswest Kent. Officers have reminded residents
