News Colts take off
COLTS cricket is really taking off at the Mote CC in Maidstone with a new team of 15 and 16-year-olds to be launched this year. The club already runs teams for younger age groups and coaching sessions for primary school-age children. Last season, the number of colts hit a record of more than 80 withodedicated Sunday morning sessions. Nets started at Maplesden Noakes School on January 7. Flytip closure FLYTIPPERS who threw garden rubbish in a narrow lane at Stock- bury forced its closure to other mo- torists for days. Kent County Council was forced
to shut the road in early December to prevent anyone driving into the tree branches and gardenwaste left in South Street, off the A249.
Assault arrest FUGITIVE Burt Goble has been re- captured by Kent Police. The 36-year-old, from Shepway,
was reported on the run after an as- sault in Maidstone.

Lanes open on town’s new gyratory system
THEnewnorth-bound lanes of the Maidstone bridges gyratory system have opened. The £6m project hopes to shave 74 seconds from the average journey, and traffic travelling from Bishops Way towards the M20 via Fairmeadow will flow more freely with the extra capacity. Work on the lower High Street
footway is not likely to be com- pleted until mid-January, due to a delay in obtaining granite slabs from a foreign supplier. Motorist Pat Corry (49) said: “Peo-
ple will get used to getting into the right lanes, which is the most con- fusing bit. “If you’re going north on Bishops
Way towards the gyratory you need to be in the left or middle lanes when heading for the bridges and in the middle or the right lanes if using the new road. That’s the gist of it. “I’ve been over a few times since it opened and the traffic does seem to flow a little better.” But the new layout prompted a mixed reaction online, with one say-
ing: “What is new? Drivers not watching where they are going and failing to read clear road markings and signs!” Another wrote: “This is now a complicated layout. Signage is to- tally inadequate andwas crying out for an overhead gantry system giv- ing clearer guidance.” When the systemwas introduced
on December 1, a Kent County Council statement said: “Drivers travelling towards Chatham will need to be in the centre and outside lanes on Bishops Way. There are
also additional traffic signals that drivers need to be aware of. "For the first week after opening,
we will be assessing the traffic movements and optimising the traf- fic signal settings to ensure that they work to their full potential and de- liver the maximum benefit. "Works on the footway at the
lower High Street will continue into the New Year, but access for pedes- trians will be maintained and all traffic management will be removed from the road for the Christmas pe- riod.
