Ultimate Canada Update ART HAWKINS DEVELOPMENT FUND SUCCESS

Every year, Ultimate Canada is honored to be supporting great initiation projects through the Art Hawkins Development Fund. The AH Fund supports the accessibility and development of Ultimate and Spirit of the Game in Canada with children, youth and those with a disability, especially in economically disadvantaged communities. Money raised through the Art Hawkins Great Canadian Ultimate Game goes toward this annual fund. You can also support the Art Hawkins Development Fund anytime by donating online: DONATE NOW In 2016, Ultimate Canada was able to support 3 great initiatives with close to $4,000 in discs, cash donation, and NCCP training support.

This summer, the Shaughnessy Park School introduced a noon hour introduction and developmental club, as well as a Junior High School Team, with the support of the Art Hawkins Fund.

The project had two parts.

1) For Elementary students, an introduction session focusing on throwing, catching and some basic rules and instill the spirit of the game, was held every Tuesday at noon.

2) For Junior High, a Junior high school team was created. They practiced 2 times a week after school. They learned and developed throws, run drills, and learn the rules and also put a emphasis on the spirit of the game.

“A large population of our students are considered at risk students, are of aboriginal decent and are new comers, and refugees. Many of our students do not have the op- portunity to play any form of organized sports.” - Angela Perez, Vice Principal.

The Montreal Ultimate Association (AUM) supported the creation of 6 youth recreational leagues in their community. Each location was host to a regular league, as well as some inter- league match up.

After witnessing the fun these kids were having, the AUM decided to host a End of Season Tournament to celebrate the successful summer leagues. 4 of the 6 locations sent in a team, and the kids were able to play a round robin tournament filled with great plays and spirited games. Most of the AH Fund donation was used to support the coaches of these leagues. There can’t be great league without passionate coaches! The AUM would like to sincerely thank the volunteers who gave their time to share their knowledge and passion of the game with these youth players.

In 2016, Fit Spirit created a new program called FunFit. FitSpirit encourages schools and organizations from

different milieus to create their own original sports activities to encourage teenage girls aged 12 to 17 to get moving. It’s spread out over a period of 8 to 10 weeks between September and December. Ultimate Canada supported this initiative by providing Ultimate and Coaching resources and contact to schools that would like to introduce Ultimate as part of FunFit. UC also donated discs to be given out as prizes to schools that registers through the FunFit program.
