ONTARIO WJUC Comes to Canada Waterloo.
When I relocated to
It’s been an exciting handful of years for top quality Ultimate here in Waterloo. In 2011 we hosted the Canadian University Ultimate Championships and 2014 saw the Canadian Ultimate Championships in our backyard. Last month the World Flying Disc Federation awarded the 2018 World Junior Ultimate Championships to

Waterloo in 2010, I had a single goal in mind for the community – host a WFDF world championship. CUUC 2011 and CUC 2014 were great events to build up the local volunteer base and to allow people to get familiar with the roles and expectations that come with hosting major Ultimate events. All of these events were only made possible by the unwavering support from the City of Waterloo. In fact, it was the City of Waterloo that approached me last year to ask when the next big Ultimate event was coming. Myself and my organizing team were still a little exhausted considering we were only about 18 months removed from CUC planning. A WJUC bid was developed after getting confirmation that most of the hardworking organizing committee from CUC 2014 was willing to return and commit to making WJUC 2018 a success. Waterloo is home to a league of approximately 800 players, but

when it comes time to put the community and elite level Ultimate in the spotlight, a great number of committed and talented volunteers are eager to help.

organizing team, I moved forward with the bid and now that the event has been awarded, the hard work is just beginning. As much as CUC is a much larger event, hosting an international tournament poses a number of different challenges which should really fill our two- year planning window. Just for some perspective, we must address a variety of meal considerations, language translation, opening/ closing ceremony design, differing national federation timelines and a host of other unique challenges that make this much more than simply recreating CUC. Waterloo is looking forward to welcoming the best junior players from across the world and we’re committed to hosting a truly world class event that can represent both Waterloo and Ultimate Canada to the highest standards.
