‘Just Chillin’ Upbeat December … Sweet and Savory for all.

A little History...& More! by Ellie Schmidt ~ eschmidt@upbeattimes.com

Sonoma County, CA. ~ Con- sidering that in our youth we are impressed by fi lms, music, theatre, art and all the people we know-- my fa- vorites were

the bio pics, now

called

“classic fi lms”

of the 1930’s: espe- cially

“Louis

Pasteur” (1935) “Emile Zola” (1937) as portrayed by the ex- tremely talented actor Paul Muni; and the Spencer Tracy portrayal of “T omas Edison.” T ese are still available for

giſt s, if you like. Cel-

ebrat-

ing Louis Pasteur’s

194th De- cember 27th birthday—

he is one of the greatest

chemists/

microbiologists who ever lived. Perhaps it was his volatile Gallic temperament that led him to drive his willing team of assistants to complete exhaustion and despair. Maybe the medical profession’s best example of “the benefi ts out- weighed the risks.” T e creator of the fi rst vaccines for rabies and anthrax, Pasteur gave the scien- tifi c world the support it needed to determine the germ theory of disease. He zealously invented a technique for treating milk and wine to stop bacterial contamina- tion. Edison turned out to become a

fantastically clever business man with a knack for selling his ideas

like no other. But, it was actually Nikola Tesla, (1856-1943), sort of “mad scientist”/great inventor, who zealously pur-

sued

his endless, fervent passion for all things electrical. Tesla approached Edison outlin- ing his work to improve on Edison’s and his team’s eff orts to establish

DC, or di- rect cur- rent, by moving

forward to Tesla’s AC, or alternat- ing current. Edison did not pay Tesla as he promised to, accord- ing to documents, and they parted ways. Undaunted, Tesla went on to achieve many patents. Marconi is said to have used more than 17 of Tesla’s patents to transmit the fi rst wireless messages across the Atlantic. Tesla, the electri- cal engineering genius behind every digital thing-a-mabob used by us all these days, would even be responsible for Twittering. Hmmm.

Happy 61st birthday to comedi- an solemn looking Steven Wright

beloved for his original brand of ironic, surprising joking. Never cracking a smile, he can say such things as: “It’s a small world, but I wouldn’t want to paint it.” Or, his cavalier: “I almost broke

arms trying to hold open

a

both my revolving

door for a woman.” Another favorite: “I got a new dog. He’s a paranoid retriever. He brings back everything because he’s not sure what I threw him.” And one we all understand: “Every morning I get up

and make instant coff ee and I drink it so I have the energy

to make real coff ee.” Happy 88th Birthday on De-

cember 7 to Noam Chomsky, the highly controversial American linguist, active in analytic philoso- phy, and one of the founders of the fi eld of cognitive science. He has authored over a hundred books; he is still actively teaching and men- toring at MIT--since 1955. Congrats to Emma Murano,

age 117, of Verbania, Italy, who is now the oldest lady in the world. Although she has no teeth, her cu- rious choice of food favorites are 2 raw eggs each day and cookies.

JOKES & Humor # 2

My husband was waterskiing when he fell into the river. As the boat circled to pick him up, he noticed a hunter sitting in a duck boat in the reeds. My husband put his hands in the air and joked, “Don’t shoot!”

The hunter responded, “Don’t quack.”
