My wonderful family and I just got back from the Florida Keys August 15, 2016. We brought your wonderful Upbeat Times with us and as you can see, took a picture on the Key, Key West. We love reading your paper and so appreciate all of the hard work you and your staff put into it! I wanted you to have this picture, and perhaps consider publishing it? From left; Jebediah Forrest, daughter Leilah Forrest Sterck & Kailani Forrest. Thank you in advance for your time, and I hope you are having a wonderful day! ~ Sincerely, Kailani
Cayo Hueso was the original name for Key West was which means “Island of Bones.” The term “key” comes from the Spanish word “Cayo“ meaning “small island.” Early native inhabitants used the island as a mass graveyard, causing it to be littered with bones.
In 1521 Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer, crew member for Christopher Columbus and former governor of Puerto Rico, was the first European to visit Key West. Leon found Key West by mistake while searching for the fountain of youth.
A small Spanish colony of fishermen was established.
Many of the residents of Key West were immigrants from the Bahamas, known as Conchs (pronounced ‘conks’), who arrived in increasing numbers after 1830. Many were sons and daughters of Loyalists who fled to the nearest Crown soil during the American Revolution.
