MISE EN SCÈNE LOCATION AND SETTING
The location and setting of the film is Los Angeles, California. The film is heavily based on ‘making it’ in the industry, with Mia wanting to become a professional actress and Sebastian owning his own nightclub. Since the film is a musical it fabricates the city of Los Angeles to create a so-called La La Land. The film's title is a reference to both a nickname for the city of Los Angeles as well as a euphemism for a state of being out of touch with reality., which is expressed through the eccentric and outlandish musical numbers.
There are various shots in the trailer , which show that the film is set in Los Angeles, like in the beginning there are various establishing shots of downtown Los Angeles. As well, there are aspects commonly referred with Los Angeles, like acting and the idea of fame. Mia and Sebastian walk on film sets and performing on stages with people watching and cheering.
Throughout the trailer, both Mia and Sebastian are presented as outsiders to the city of Los Angeles. This changes how the setting of the film is perceived in their eyes, and makes the city seem more magical and imaginary.
