The genre of the film is portrayed glamorously through the trailer. Since the film is a romantic musical comedy-drama, there are various aspects that should be shown to conveys these genres.
The shots containing both of the main characters, Mia and Sebastian, show the romantic aspects of the film. Such as their long glares amongst one another or kissing and embracing each other. It is easy to identify that the film is a romance.
There are dramatic aspects shown throughout the trailer, which further shows how the film is a drama and contains a grounded reality, amongst the magical and dream-like setting of La La Land. For example, when Mia gets turned down for the role and Sebastian gets fired, this continues to develop the idea that they are outsiders and have not assimilated into the city of Los Angeles. As well, when Mia questions whether she is “good enough”, this shows her fear of being self conscious and not able to reach her dream of being an actress.
Through the trailer, it develops the idea that the film is a musical. At the beginning of the trailer, Mia is walking alone in the streets while a slow and soothing piano music plays in the background. She then enters a club, and the person playing the piano is revealed to be Sebastian. As she approaches Sebastian, he kisses her, which suddenly indulges the audience into a sense of fantasy, spontaneity and imagination which is a common trope used in musical films.
