COLOUR, LIGHTING, MAKEUP AND COSTUME MISE EN SCÈNE
Since the film is a musical, the makeup and costumes presented are important visual codes and are showcased during the musical numbers and are made to stand out. This is a familiar convention in musical films, with the song numbers performed in the film made to seem dream-like and surreal, epitomizing the magic and fantasy of Tinsel Town.
The lighting in the trailer is important, since it is used various times for creative and visual narratives. For instance, when Sebastian is playing the piano, there is usually a spotlight on him, which is meant to show how playing the piano is his dream. In Mia’s first meeting with him, there is a spotlight on him to foreshadow his importance in the film.
Colour is another important aspect of the film, with different settings bathed in different colour tones which evoke particular meanings. For example, when Mia is walking through Los Angeles, there are blue tones which represent her loneliness after she has been rejected from the audition, and purple tones, which represent the magical atmosphere of Los Angeles. In addition, before she enters the club, the door is bordered with red neon lights, which can represent the love and affection she will find inside.
