CHARACTERS

In the trailer we can see that Mia and Sebastian are the two main protagonists of the film and that they will also be the central romantic interest throughout the film, due to their fairy-tale like chemistry portrayed through their conversations and musical numbers.

Through the trailer’s entirety we see the romance of Mia and Sebastian grow from their first meeting at the jazz club through to the various flashy musical numbers they are in. This is key in symbolizing how they will be a singing-dancing duo, like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, who are iconic dance partners who have performed in musicals like this.

In the trailer’s opening, both of them are in negative frames of mind, since Mia gets rejected from an audition and Sebastian gets fired from a nightclub. This is useful in indicating how the characters in the film will proceed, considering that they are outsiders to the magical city of La La Land, which is a nickname for Los Angeles. Their dream is to get their ‘big break’, by being successful in Hollywood, but as success mounts, the dreams they worked so hard to maintain threaten to tear them apart, which brings surprising conflict into this romantic musical comedy.

Mia states that “It's pretty strange how we keep running into each other”, referencing how it is bizarre that keep meeting, which is a trope commonly used in musicals so that both of the individuals in the pair will come together to sing.
