‘A PERFECT INTRODUCTION

TO PADDLE BOARDING’ - BY NEIL LAWRENCE

“An early start sees us meeting at Reception to catch our concierge service transportation to the mouth of the Gannel in Newquay – the starting point for our paddle boarding experience with new recruit Will – Park Leisure’s ‘Water Action-Man’.

Meeting us at the car park, Will’s

ready to go with all the boards pumped up and fitted with paddles. Wetsuits on and safety talk over, we make our way down to the water’s edge. Climbing onto our boards we head out to sea, all the time Will advising us of the best way to do things. Starting off on our knees, we make our way to Crantock beach. Knees hurting and legs a little shaky, we progress to a standing position and

float along, taking in the scenery on what could not have been a more perfect day. The river’s awash with people of all

ages paddle boarding, canoeing and rowing boats. And there’s even a group of horses galloping down through the water’s edge. Gaining confidence, a

mistake lands me in the water.

Fortunately, it only comes up to my waist so I’m soon back on the board and on my way. Reaching Crantock beach, we briefly rest then head back. Paddling up stream seems easier

and before we know it we’re back at the start, just as the concierge pulls into the car park. Perfect timing and the perfect end to an excellent day. I just can’t wait for the next one!”

‘GETTING ONBOARD WITH WILL’

- BY SHARON LAWRENCE “Picture

a beautiful summer’s day,

gently paddle boarding along an inlet as horses gallop through the water. Awestruck by the amazing waterside properties, we exchange pleasantries with others out on the water while desperately trying not to fall off! Next day, it’s time to suit up and try our hand at surfing. Our instructor Will’s infectious enthusiasm is truly contagious and his patience, understanding and encouraging words spur us on to keep trying.

If that’s not enough, another day sees

us throwing ourselves about in the wave’s while we get to grips with body boarding.

No, we’re not dreaming and this isn’t the

sun-soaked Caribbean. We’re actually in Cornwall and our little slice of heaven that is Oyster Bay. For the past three years this has been our escape from our extremely busy lives.

Some might say I’m having a mid-life

crisis. However I’d just like to say a huge thank you to whoever employed Will Draper as the new Activities Sports Coordinator. As two 50-somethings, my husband and I no longer sit there wishing we could surf, body and paddle board. We’re out in the water, enjoying every minute. And despite the aches and pains, we’ll continue to do it for many years to come!”
