Editor’s Letter

A British summer never seems to last long and autumn – the season of “mists and mellow fruitfulness” –

is quickly upon us. At least this year, we can hardly complain about the rain!

We enjoyed a warm and sunny summer right into September, which was great for families wanting to enjoy activities at home, around the county and beyond.

The leaves are already turning that beautiful golden brown, carpeting the village greens, town parks, the meadows and the woods around our beautiful part of the south east.

Many Kent folk opted for a summer holiday here at home.

We went to Wales in the last week of August, which is a risky business at the best of times, given the amount of rain that falls in that part of the world, but the weather was wonderful.

Walking is another great passion which starts for me in earnest in the autumn. I love the King’s Wood, the paths through Leeds Castle, Broomfield, the orchards at Chegworth and the back roads to Sutton Valence.

This year, I intend to walk atop the North Downs to take in the views across the countryside towards where I live. I feel slightly ashamed that in 17 years living in Kent, I have not been up there before.

In this issue we meet Jay Saunders, the young and ambitious manager of Maidstone United and his wife Hayley, as he juggles a massive job in non-league football with his other more important role as a father of four.

We hear the brave story of Rachel Nelson, an inspirational young woman who navigated a difficult journey in her life through martial arts.

And local tree surgeon Theo McCausland shares his pongy secret for staving off a cold this winter.

Plus, if you’re thinking of taking in a panto in the run- up to Christmas, we have a comprehensive guide to the productions on at our local theatres in Kent.

And there is much, much more.

All the best.
