KENT & EAST SUSSEX RAILWAY

The earliest plans for a railway for Tenterden were made in the 1850s and was for a time a frequently-used service, but by the time it was nationalised in 1948, the numbers were already ebbing away. Closure followed in 1961 as nearly all traffic had gone. Soon after closure, a society was formed with the object of preserving the line and faced a 13-year struggle before the first trains were run. Years of neglect and the original lightly-engineered nature of the railway meant that the task had to be tackled in stages, and the first two miles at Tenterden were opened in February 1974. Since then there has been further expansion and the railway has gone from strength to strength.

standard gauge, steam-operated passenger railway in the world to operate a public service. The society ran its first train in August 1960, less than three years after the line from East Grinstead to Lewes which had been shut by British Railways. In March 2013, the Bluebell Railway commenced running through to its new East Grinstead terminus station. Today the railway is managed and run largely by volunteers. Having preserved a number of steam locomotives even before the cessation of steam service on British mainline railways in 1968, today it has over 30 steam locomotives.
