Penningtons Manches – at the centre of Basingstoke’s transformation

Based in Basing View, top 50 law firm Penningtons Manches LLP is in good company with other leading organisations such as the AA, RSM, Kier Construction, Paribas, Sun Life and Thales as the town’s commercial centre undergoes a transformation for the 21st

century

With new retail outlets and a multi-million pound joint training and development centre for South West Trains and Network Rail all open for business, the next phase includes a 60,000 sq ft Grade A office development and a new mixed-use plaza.

Since 1986, Penningtons Manches’ Basingstoke office has been the second largest within the firm’s network of seven offices. Among the Hampshire- based team of over 100 staff are 10 partners and more than 50 lawyers, including three of the firm’s most senior partners – Franco Bosi, head of the business services division, Tim Palmer, head of the private individuals division, and Charles Brooks, corporate partner and former chairman of Multilaw.

As a member of international law network, Multilaw, Penningtons Manches is a truly international practice that regularly co- ordinates multi-jurisdictional projects for clients as well as working seamlessly across its own seven offices. The Basingstoke office can call upon the expertise of its UK and international colleagues – particularly those specialising in capital markets, pensions and funds formation – whenever required.

The office has highly-ranked clinical negligence, personal injury, private client, social housing and employment practices as well as strong corporate, company secretarial and property teams.

Partner Julie Burton – who is on The Legal 500’s elite ‘leading lawyers’ list of outstanding lawyers nationwide – leads the specialist Court of Protection team in the Basingstoke office. Working alongside the clinical negligence and personal injury department on many cases, it has established a significant reputation for advising and assisting individuals, their families, carers, trustees, beneficiaries and other professionals on a broad range of issues relating to personal injury trusts, capacity and deputyships.

Well-resourced private client team

According to The Legal 500, private client partner Michael Cash leads ‘a strong bench of senior associates’ and the team stands out for its ‘wealth of knowledge, experience and substantial resources’. He and senior associate Sian Hodgson are also applauded by the directory for their ‘impressive knowledge of the technical law’. They are recognised across the South East for their expertise in dealing with all types of contentious probate and trusts disputes.

‘Impressive range of clients for employment team’

The Basingstoke employment practice, comprising partners David Bickford, Chris Syder and Gemma Woodhouse, acts for a wide range of clients including

the CBI, BBC Worldwide and Wellington College. As the CBI’s governing body representative for the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Chris Syder advises clients on compliance with the Modern Slavery Act 2015, and the potential risks to businesses from their supply chains.

Strong track record in social housing sector

Partner Linda Storey leads the firm’s highly-ranked social housing practice. Cited as ‘very good’ and a ‘key name in this space’, the team advises on high-end real estate and development matters for major providers as well as shared ownership schemes. Storey is also recognised as a ‘Best Lawyer in the UK for Social Housing’ on the Best Lawyers website.

Working alongside the social housing department is a well- established team of residential property and conveyancing specialists, headed by James Howard, who represent clients on residential property transactions of all sizes.

As the regeneration work in Basingstoke town centre gathers pace, partner Franco Bosi is upbeat about Penningtons Manches’ standing on both a regional and national level: “In the latest financial year our turnover rose to £61.6 million, representing a 7% increase over the previous financial year. We have also invested significant resource in the ongoing development of our IT and knowledge systems. These advances will provide a strong platform for progression as we continue to enhance our position as one of the South East’s ‘legal heavyweights’ and see the further strengthening of our client offering.”
