FASHION IN 100 PIECES

M

ake sure you find time to visit the incredible ‘History of Fashion in 100 Pieces’ exhibition at the

Fashion Museum in Bath. Running until 1 January 2019, it showcases era-defining outfits to

garments that have hit the headlines. It covers everything from a man’s cream silk satin embroidered coat and pink silk breeches of the 1780s to Jean-Paul Gautier’s innovative black wool, double breasted men’s jacket with jewelled sleeves for 1991, while woven silk shoes with leather-covered wooden clogs dating from 1740 sit easily alongside a pair of Nike Air Jordan trainers of the 1990s. Names such as Christian Dior, Yves St Laurent and Jean Muir abound, but there are other gems too, such as the purple hopsack jacket worn by Noel Coward in the 1960s and Craig Green's curious, electric blue “Dress of the Year” from 2015. Thanks to some excellent curation, this exhibition perfectly demonstrates the way that the British have dressed over the last 500 years. For more information, head to www.fashionmuseum.co.uk. Q

Tied by History T

he Autumn/Winter collection from bow tie supremo Rory Hutton heads east for inspiration. Rory takes an imaginary journey through China and India, enhanced with a colour

palette from children's storybook illustrations of the 1920s. The result is a collection that is both nostalgic and original. It includes five silk pocket squares with hand-rolled edges, each one featuring one of Rory's hand-drawn images of Indian elephants, Chinese gardens and exotic jungles, plus five matching self-tie bow ties and six Irish linen bow ties. The latter are hand-printed with images selected from Rory's collection of Victorian ephemera. Rory draws inspiration from the countryside of his childhood and the stories of his grandparents. Not surprisingly, heritage fabrics, especially Irish linen, have been a staple of his collections since he launched Rory Hutton in 2013, following internships at the likes of Vivienne Westwood and Hardy Amies. See them for yourself at Fortnum and Mason or Herald and Heart in London or at Brown Thomas in Dublin. Q
