million chickens a week and supply about a third of Costco’s fresh chicken supply. Costco began looking at Fremont as a

possible site for the processing plant more than a year ago and representatives visited in August, 2015. In October the city was named one of four finalists and the leadership learned it was the company’s preferred location in February. Winning over and informing the public

was a challenge, Harry said when asked. “As a country people want to be more and

more involved in processes like this,” she said. Fremont’s leaders had to “bridge that gap,”

Harry said. “To get the public engaged and informed and excited about the opportunity” while also informing Costco of the advantages of locating in the area. A public hearing and elected officials

“doing their homework” in order to ask informed questions and provide answers helped the process to its outcome, Harry said. “So they decided yes, this is the right thing

to do for the community,” Harry said. During the public hearing phase some people aired concerns about pollution, safety

and workforce issues like immigrant labor. Johnson, who admitted to having initial doubts about the project, became convinced after Costco answered his questions about the plant’s regulation. “Tis project will be safe,” he said. Harry said about $180 million of the

plant’s $300 million capital investment price tag will go toward the plant’s three buildings: a hatchery, the processing plant and a feed mill. Around $120 million will go to the grower network and construction of close to 400 barns for raising broilers, breeders and pullets. Each barn would raise about 43,000

chickens. Of additional benefit to local agri- business is the feed demand for corn and soybeans. Each barn would take 300,000 bushels of corn and 3,000 tons of soybeans from local farmers, wrote Chris Clayton, ag policy editor for DTN Te Progressive Farmer. Te move is part of Costco’s plan to have

more control over its own supply chain, Fortune magazine reported. Te company would be able to determine the size and cut of the meat. At the same time, Costco has sought to move toward antibiotic-free and cage-free chickens. NT
