“And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, ‘Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.’ ” – Luke 6:20-21

Six years ago, an earthquake brought wide-spread destruction to nearby Haiti. Many people were moved to ease the suffering in that country, and humanitarian aid came to the capital city of Port au Prince through a wide multitude of organizations.

Today, media outlets have shifted their focus away from the plight of Haiti and to more popular stories —- political campaigns, unrest and violence, world economies in flux, and of course, which popstars are fighting on social media. And with that, most humanitarian organizations have turned their attention elsewhere, leaving behind a void.

The fact is, Haiti remains the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest in the world. People in this small nation still need help, particularly outside Port au Prince. Villages in rural Haiti didn’t receive massive media attention, but it is here where the poor and needy live.

Haiti has a population of around 10.5 million people. About 80% of those fall under the national poverty line. At least 54% live in abject poverty on less than $1.90 US per day. Yet in rural areas, that figure jumps to 74.9% living in abject poverty. And as hard as that is to wrap our heads around, it is more staggering when we consider how many children are affected. After all, one third of Haiti’s population are children 14 years old and younger.

THERE ARE SUPPORTERS OFWORLD MISSIONARY EVANGELISM WHO HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN HAITI AND REMAIN COMMITTED TO MAKING A DIFFERENCE THERE.
