Celebrating the Pidcock

Scholarship A 17-year ministry supporting education and service concludes its mission BY CAROL LANDES, PIDCOCK COMMITTEE CHAIR

The outpouring of love and respect for John Pidcock following his death in May 1999 resulted in First Presbyterian Church receiving many gifts for the John S. Pidcock Memorial Fund. The Pidcock family decided to establish the John S. Pidcock Scholarship to be a reflection of his discipline in and commitment to his faith in God through dedication to the church, education, mission, and community service.

A committee was formed consisting of Stephen Emick (ex officio), Donna Pidcock, Edward Richards, Pam Weiss, and me. A mission statement, scholarship application process, and Scholarship Committee guidelines were written, and on December 15, 1999, I presented a face sheet to Session and requested approval of the John S. Pidcock Scholarship, which was approved unanimously. Te mission statement of the John S. Pidcock Scholarship of First Presbyterian Church, Allentown, states that the scholarship “will be awarded for educational, mission, or community service pursuits to qualified applicants who are in need of financial assistance.”

In 2000, committee members awarded the first Pidcock Scholarship and continued to meet annually, interview applicants, and award scholarships. Over the past 17 years, 50 applicants received scholarships totaling $154,000.

Committee members have received many thanks, both orally and written, from recipients for whom the scholarship made college and/or graduate study possible. All of the awardees had financial need and excelled academically, in community service, and in commitment to FPCA and involvement in a variety of its activities.

Committee members thank God for the opportunity to assist such impressive young people in furthering their dreams of continuing their education and moving into their chosen careers. Te Pidcock Scholarship Committee concluded their work by allocating all of the funds, and are so grateful to have had the opportunity to honor John Pidcock in this manner.

“Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with

whatever gift each of you has received.” —1 PETER 4:10
