Learn Grown-Up Stuff & Drink Beer!

T

he Adulting School was created to help fill in the gaps in our adult know-how. You know--the stuff we wish we'd learned in high school or college and never did. So many of us are doing well overall but have been limping along with patched-together systems for financial management or organiza- tion that don't work that well. We know you can rock adulting- -you just need some more skills and feedback about the process. We're getting folks together who know everything you've been wanting to learn to MacGyver adulating.

We offer the info in accessible, fun webinars and blogs so

that you can learn at your own pace and we have tons of people for you to talk to and ask the questions you've been needing answered about: Financial Basics, Health and Wellness, Relation- ships/Communication and Make-It/Fix-It Skills.

The Adulting School also hosts live events and is a great way to learn, have a good time with friends, meet some new people, drink good beer and eat yummy local food. Check out the event coming to Portland, Maine this November 13th! See ad on page 29.

OrthoAccess – No Appointment Needed Suppose you’ve twisted your ankle hiking or you’ve pulled a

muscle while golfing. If you live in the Greater Portland area or anywhere in Southern Maine, you now have an alternative to the ER for urgent orthopaedic attention. OrthoAccess is Maine's first urgent care walk-in clinic for immediate assessment and treatment of sprains, strains, minor fractures, dislocations, and other sports and activity-related injuries.

OrthoAccess is a better choice than the ER. Here’s why:

Specialized treatment: Urgent care is provided by some of the best-regarded orthopaedic specialists in the state who specialize in treatments for bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints.

Shorter wait: Why spend hours in the ER waiting room, when you could get seen right away at OrthoAccess? In most cases, the wait is just a few minutes. (The longest waits are usually during the first hour of clinic time each day, so you may want to plan accordingly.)

Less expensive: You’ll pay a lot less than at the ER. OrthoAccess is an extension of OA Centers for Orthopaedics so their charges and co-pays are generally the same as for visits to a specialty doctor.

The next time you injure yourself and are in need of immediate attention, head for the OrthoAccess walk-in clinic located at the OA Centers for Orthopaedics facility at 33 Sewall Street in Port- land. Walk-in urgent care clinic hours are Monday through Friday, 1pm to 8pm and Saturdays, 9am to 2pm. For more information, visit www.ortho-access.com or call (207) 828-2180. See ad on back cover.

8 Essential Living Maine ~ September/October 2016

ow much of an impact can a passionate, caring group of women have on local charities? If you said donate $50,000 in less than 2 years to a total of 8 different Maine non-profit organizations then you would be correct! The Southern Maine Chapter of 100+ Women Who Care are making a difference and it hasn’t taken long to accomplish. Based on the organization 100+ Who Care, the Southern Maine chapter is 1 of 350 chapters around the world. Deb Bergeron, a certified personal and profes- sional coach, and founder of Ocean of Possibilities, started this chapter in October 2014 because she is passionate about giving back to the community in which she grew up and raised her fam- ily. She saw this as a way to bring together women who have that same desire and at the same time be able to collectively make a difference.

H How is this group different from others? First, it’s free to join

and it’s free to attend the events where appetizers and desserts are served and raffle prizes are given away! So, what’s the catch? When you commit to being a member, you are also committing to writing a $50 check four times a year. Why? That’s where the collective part comes in. By having 100+ women all write a check for $50 at one time at a quarterly meeting, they are able to give a much larger donation together than by themselves alone.

How are organizations chosen for the donation? This is where the cool part comes in! Members who have signed the Commit- ment Form and completed a Charitable Organization Fact Sheet prior to the meeting can put the name of a local organization into the hat for a random drawing at the meeting. At random, three organizations are selected from the hat. The members who wrote down each name will be asked to come up and give a short 5 minute presentation as to why their chosen organization should receive the donation and then spend another 5 minutes answering questions from the members. At the end of the presentations, all the members vote for the organization they would like the dona- tion to go to. The organization with the highest number of votes receives the donation, which has averaged $6,000 each time. And now with over 195 members, they are hoping to be able to make an even bigger impact each time as long as every committed member writes their check, which is requested whether you attend the event or not.

How can you get involved? Visit 100womenwhocaresouthernmaine.com for more information and/or attend their next event on Tuesday, No- vember 1st at Woodfords Club, 179 Woodfords St, Portland from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. Registration begins at 5:45 if you would like to come early to network and enjoy delicious appetizers! So what are you waiting for? Come find out what a great group of generous and thoughtful women can do when they put their minds to it!
